Bi|o|tin [griech. bíote̅, bíotos = Leben], das; -s; Syn.: Bios II, Vitamin B7, Hautvitamin, Vitamin H: farbloses, optisch aktives bicycl. Imidazol-Derivat, das in tierischen u. pflanzlichen Geweben weit verbreitet ist. B. wirkt als Coenzym (aktives Kohlendioxid) bei Carboxygruppenübertragungen sowie vitaminartig als Hautschutzfaktor. Durch seinen Antagonisten ↑ Avidin wird B. quant. blockiert.

Biotin
 
[griechisch] das, -s, früher Vitamin H, zyklisches Harnstoffderivat mit einem Thiophenring, das als Vitamin H zu den wasserlöslichen Vitaminen gehört. Biotin ist als Koenzym (z. B. von Acetyl-CoA-Carboxylase) - über einen bestimmten Lysinrest des Enzymproteins gebunden (Biotinenzym) - an der enzymatischen Übertragung von Kohlendioxid beteiligt.
 
Ernährungsbedingter Biotinmangel kommt in der Regel nur bei übermäßigem Genuss roher Eier zustande, nicht aber durch Entfernung des Biotins aus der Nahrung, da einige in der Darmflora vertretene Bakterien Biotin synthetisieren. Das im Eiklar vorhandene Protein Avidin bindet Biotin fest und verhindert so dessen Aufnahme durch die Darmschleimhaut. Krankheitszeichen sind Dermatitis und Seborrhö.
 
1935 von dem niederländischen Biochemiker F. Kögl als Wachstumsfaktor aus einem Leberkonzentrat isoliert, wurde seine Struktur von Vincent du Vigneaud (* 1901, ✝ 1978) und Mitarbeitern aufgeklärt. Es findet sich v. a. in Hefe, Erdnüssen, Eigelb, Schokolade.
